Their comments were, “One of the first products we reviewed in 2005 and it is safe to say it blew us away (sorry). With this product Cyclaire have reinvented the wheel or at least the thing that pumps it up. In fact you don’t pump this baby at all, but pull rather like starting up an outboard motor. You also do it standing up so there’s a lot less sweat and hassle. Its performance is a useful halfway between a mini pump and a track pump – in our test it easily got up to 100psi far quicker than a mini pump and its compact size makes it ideal for tourers, commuters and leisure riders”.

Cyclaire named "Innovation of the Year"
The original Cyclaire pump was declared Cycling Plus Innovation of the Year for 2005. Here’s a quick summary: "Attach as normal to a Presta or Schrader valve and pull the small plastic handle attached to a pull-strap to inflate. The pull-strap has a 1.6m reach so you can stand up while inflating. It beat Crank Brothers’ Power Pump Alloy hands down for ease and speed of use, and matched the Topeak Mountain Morph. So is a ’new and improved version’ really needed? The Rapid has been redesigned by altering the internal gearing of its mini-compressor, allowing more air to be drawn in (via an enlarged air intake) and therefore put out. The downside is that, unlike the original Cyclaire, it isn’t designed to go above 8Opsi. However, it is genuinely faster and the makers claim it’s the fastest non-track pump out there. Of course, I couldn’t try it against every other pump available but it certainly beat my small collection of non-track pumps for speed (measured by the number of strokes required). It’s also significantly quicker than the original. I tested it by inflating a 26x1.75 Maxxis tyre to its recommended 45psi limit several times, the Rapid proving about 20 percent faster. Makers Innoverce claim a 25 percent improvement. The Rapid’s other new features include an easier-to-read pressure gauge and a locking symbol on the hose connector so you can be sure when it’s locked on to the valve. For those who regularly ride a bike with tyre pressures of no more than 70psi, this could well be the pump of choice. Fast, effective and with an ergonomic action; great for those with dodgy backs like myself". Richard Peace

Bike Europe Magazine Review
NEWCASTLE, UK - "Cyclaire is a British-made bicycle pump where the action is pulling instead of pushing. With the pump body under your foot, you pull the rope like starting a lawn mower engine. You only need a few strokes for a regular 2 bar bicycle tyre: the rotary pump unit is small, but surprisingly effective. What’s more: pressure loss is low by construction, and the Cyclaire can easily put your road race lyre at 8 or 10 bar. We even tried a car tyre: admittedly, it takes some time but you can get any pressure you want inside. The Cyclaire seems a practical commodity for all who have difficulties to reach the right pressure with a traditional minipump" www.cyclaire.com (OB)
